Participation, Precedence and Co-ordination in Dialogue

چکیده
A key problem for models of dialogue is to explain how semantic co-ordination is achieved. The collaborative model highlights pair-specfic co-ordination processes. The interactive alignment model emphasises priming processes. We report a ‘Maze-task’ experiment that investigates the effects of: a) apparent origin of an utterance (primary vs. peripheral participants) and b) prior exposure (priming) on the development of inter-speaker semantic co-ordination. The results provide evidence of both local and global semantic co-ordination phenomena that are not captured by pair-specific or priming processes. We argue that mechanisms that are sensitive to semantic differences between different forms of coordination are required and sketch a repair-driven ap-

Semantic negotiation in dialogue: the mechanisms of alignment
A key problem for models of dialogue is to explain how semantic co-ordination in dialogue is achieved and sustained. This paper presents findings from a series of Maze Task experiments which are not readily explained by the primary co-ordination mechanisms of existing models. It demonstrates that alignment in dialogue is not simply an outcome of successful interaction, but a communicative resou...

A key problem for models of dialogue is to explain how conventions are established and sustained. Existing accounts emphasize the importance of interaction, demonstrating how collaborative feedback leads to more systematized, stable and arbitrary referential conventions. However, co-ordination in dialogue requires both co-ordination of content and of process. To investigate procedural co-ordina...

The NHS and Social Care in England are facing one of the biggest financial challenges for a generation. Commissioners and providers need to work on collaborative schemes to manage the increasing demand on health and social care within a period of financial constraint. Different forms of care co-ordination have been developed at different levels across the world. In the north-west of England, th...
متن کاملThe forgotten guidelines: cross-sectional analysis of participation in muscle strengthening and balance & co-ordination activities by adults and older adults in Scotland
BACKGROUND In 2011, the UK physical activity guidelines were updated to include recommendations for muscle strengthening and balance & coordination (at least two sessions of relevant activities per week). However, monitoring and policy efforts remain focussed on aerobic activity. This study aimed to assess differences by gender and age in the a) prevalence of muscle strengthening and balance & ...

There is substantial evidence that speakers co-ordinate their contributions in dialogue. Until now, experimental studies of co-ordination have concentrated on the development of shared strategies for reference. We present an experiment that employed a novel confederate-scripting technique to investigate whether speakers also co-ordinate syntactic structure in dialogue. Pairs of speakers took it...
